The upstairs rooms never felt warm in winter and the heating bills kept climbing. The homeowner suspected the loft was losing heat, but wanted a survey-led recommendation rather than adding insulation blindly.
Their goal was simple: make the upstairs rooms feel warmer in winter and cut the heat going out through the loft.
The 100m² loft had thin and uneven insulation, with compressed areas that no longer gave consistent thermal coverage. The survey also checked that eaves ventilation could remain open once the insulation depth was increased.
That second point matters as much as the first. Insulation that is patchy or compressed leaves weak points above occupied rooms, making the house harder to heat — but increasing depth without protecting ventilation can raise condensation risk, so the specification had to address both.
We prepared the loft and laid mineral wool evenly to a measured 300mm depth across the full 100m², over two days. Eaves ventilation was retained, reflecting Building Regulations Part L guidance and BS 5250 moisture-control principles.
Continuous 300mm mineral-wool coverage with the ventilation route kept clear. The homeowner received a clear specification for what had been installed, and a 10-year workmanship guarantee.
