Plaster blown and flaking along the bottom of both walls in the entrance hall, salt staining bleeding through the paint, and black mould along the skirting line. The window reveal had gone the same way.
This is the point where painting over it stops working. Once the plaster has failed and salts are coming through, any decoration put on top of it lifts again within months.
The affected plaster was taken off back to the brickwork so the wall could be seen and treated properly — not patched over and hidden. The wall was then replastered and the skirting renewed.
The hall was left clean and ready for the homeowner to decorate.
